Theme TEIMUN 2008
Striving for Sustainable Globalization will be the central theme of the 21st TEIMUN conference.
Worldwide problems ask for worldwide solutions. Within the theme “Striving for Sustainable Globalization”, it is our goal to debate about the possible answers for the challenges associated with globalization in the world of today. There is a great relevance in asking ourselves if globalization can be sustainable in such a way that it meets the needs of our generation without compromising the abilities of generations in the future to meet their own needs.
In December 2007, the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change hosted a conference in Bali, Indonesia. In the last minute of the convention, a first agreement about a possible successor of the Kyoto Protocol was achieved. The environment related problems, are only one of the possible issues that can be seen in the light of a more sustainable globalization.
Other issues that could be discussed during the Opening Ceremony and the Conference of TEIMUN, are the seemingly endless stream of refugees from Darfur, the problems that the European Union and Russia have about the security of energy and the still expanding diseases like HIV/AIDS.
The world is moving from a local perspective towards a global perspective. The development of countries in the North is strongly linked to the development of countries in the South. The United Nations have the opportunity and the responsibility to encourage and facilitate the debate about the challenges associated with sustainable globalization. This will we be the most important task for all the participants, staff and guest speakers that come to TEIMUN 2008.
