 Theme Teimun 2010

"Rise and Fall, challenging the ongoing processes of history"

Even though history took place in the past, it’s shadow still falls over the International Relations of today. On one hand, when shaping the world through international collaboration, it is important to use the information that there is available of human behavior, which is the past. A philosopher once said; ‘Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it’.  As the United Nations was founded to prevent the occurrence of a third world war, we believe that this principle should come forward in a Model United Nations.

On the other hand we would like to emphasize the processes that can be found throughout history. One of them being the rise and fall of great powers and systems. Throughout history not only large empires such as the Roman empire en Hitler’s Third empire have collapsed, but also non-state systems such as the financial and economic international system.

With that in mind, we encourage the TEIMUN delegates of 2010 to use history as a perspective on the issues that the international society faces in the 21st century and to challenge the ongoing processes of history. Topics that will be dealt with are for example how the international society can develop a new or improved financial system and how we can manage the effects of the global recession. In addition to that, the delegates will discover whether humanity can learn from the past and what role the United Nations can play in this process. Can lessons from the past prevent genocide and severe violations of human rights? Consider the past and you shall know the future..
